Cessna 172N Weight and Balance Calculator

This calculator uses normal category loading data for the 1978 Cessna Model 172N Skyhawk. Enter the current empty weight and empty arm from the weight and balance record for the individual aircraft.

Maximum takeoff weight: 2,300 lbs. Maximum landing weight: 2,300 lbs. Standard usable fuel: 40 US gal.

Cessna 172N weight and balance limits

The maximum takeoff weight used by this calculator is 2,300 lbs. The aft CG limit is 47.3 inches aft of datum. The forward limit changes with aircraft weight.

Aircraft weight Forward CG limit Aft CG limit
1,950 lbs or less 35.0 in 47.3 in
2,300 lbs 38.5 in 47.3 in

Between 1,950 and 2,300 lbs, the forward limit runs from 35.0 to 38.5 inches. The calculator uses linear interpolation between those points.

Fuel

The usable fuel quantity used by this calculator is 40 US gallons. At 6 lbs per gallon, 40 gallons weighs 240 lbs.

Fuel is calculated at an arm of 48.0 inches. Enter the actual usable fuel quantity aboard.

Front and rear seats

The front seat arm is 37.0 inches. The rear seat arm is 73.0 inches.

Rear seat loading has a greater aft effect on center of gravity than the same weight in the front seats.

Baggage

Baggage area 1 uses an arm of 95.0 inches and is limited to 120 lbs. Baggage area 2 uses an arm of 123.0 inches and is limited to 50 lbs.

The combined load in baggage areas 1 and 2 must not exceed 120 lbs.

Empty weight and arm

The published standard empty weight of 1,393 lbs is a reference value for the base Skyhawk configuration. The Skyhawk II published standard empty weight is about 1,419 lbs.

Use the current empty weight and empty arm from the aircraft weight and balance record. Installed equipment, repairs and modifications can change both values.

Normal category

The limits on this page are for the normal category. Utility category loading uses different limits and restrictions.

Use the approved aircraft documents when calculating a utility category loading.

Reference datum

The reference datum used for the loading data on this page is the lower portion of the front face of the firewall. Arms are measured aft of that datum.

Source

The loading stations, maximum weights and center of gravity limits used on this page are based on the 1978 Cessna Model 172N Pilot's Operating Handbook, primarily Sections 2 and 6.

Other Cessna 172 variants can have different fuel capacities, loading stations, empty weights and center of gravity limits. Use documentation applicable to the exact aircraft model.
